Find A Grave

Standard

This is another one that can be done anywhere with various ages and it’s 100% FREE! Think cool, historic, scavenger hunt in a graveyard!

Find A Grave.com is an online database that helps people locate the graves of ancestors, friends, and famous people. You can also create virtual memorials, add photos, and you can leave virtual flowers or a note to a loved one’s page. You can search or brose cemeteries and grave records.

BUT, here is where it becomes an outdoor activity…

The Low Down: All this information has to come from somewhere! People send our requests for help to locate buried family members and get pictures of their loved ones resting place. You can register as a volunteer! Volunteers can spend as little or as much time as you want! It’s totally low maintenance! Once you become a volunteer (which is a super easy process) you can pull up all un-fulfilled requests. I typically pull up a church or cemetery by name and all requests for that place pop up. I print out a list and give a copy to everyone in our group (when the kids have friends spend the night we divide into teams) and we all take off running to see who can find the most people! I get pictures that were requested and I upload them later. Most of the time I get a thank you note back from the person who requested the photo! It’s an easy way to give back to others and help them connect with the person that has passed!

Side note: If you like Geocaching (read my post on this if you aren’t sure what this is) you would be surprised how many cemeteries also have Geo’s hidden in them! BAM! Win, win!!!!
